Glen Rose School Chaplain Training To Support Student Ethics: Program Expanded

The National School Chaplain Association (NSCA) has expanded their training and certification program, now with a focus on helping individuals gain the skills necessary to support students in developing a strong code of ethics.

With a focus on training aspiring school chaplains to meet the spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs of young people, the NSCA’s expanded certification course includes key skills for offering moral and ethical guidance.

A recent study published in the Sapientia Global Journal of Arts, Humanities and Development Studies shows that school chaplains can occupy an important role in terms of assisting students with moral and ethical decisions relating to many different life issues, including substance use, poor academic performance, family and parental challenges, and behavioral disorders. The NSCA course helps school chaplains provide an environment in which students are invited to grow ethically, while also receiving non-judgmental support. “School chaplains provide guidance and help build resilient young people,” says a representative. “In a historical era of conflict, discord, and loneliness - the role of the chaplain has never been more critical.”

Recognizing that many students in today’s schools may be struggling with issues such as gender confusion, a lack of direction, and a sense of hopelessness, a certified school chaplain can offer non-denominational spiritual care and counsel.

According to the NSCA, a chaplain’s contribution to the moral and ethical development of the student body consists of four crucial areas: school safety, helping students explore and honor their identities, creating and cultivating community, and illuminating and igniting purpose.

As school chaplains are considered core members of school staff, the NSCA certification course also includes fundamental safety training modules, including Active Shooter, Threat Assessment, and Stop the Bleed.

The online course is accredited through Oral Roberts University and is self-paced, so it can be started at any time. It takes approximately 8 weeks to complete, depending on an individual’s schedule and study speed. Participants receive ongoing support from NSCA advisors, throughout the duration of the course and after certification has been completed.
